McCreary-Clark family correspondence, 1869-1906.

Letters, postcards, and ephemera primarily written by or addressed to Mrs. Henry A. (Sophy McCreary) Clark. The collection also includes letters to Sophy's husband and parents written by friends and various members of the McCreary and Clark families. There is a group of letters from Sophy to her parents and brother (16 items, 1878-1879) that describe her experiences as a newly married woman in Falls River, Massachusetts. Topics include dressmaking and clothing; various social engagements; the publication of her husband's book; church attendance; travel to historic Puritan sites; friendships with other women; the weather; visits from her brother; and her current reading material. A second series of letters consists of General D.B. McCreary's correspondence to his daughter, primarily during his time as a Senator in Harrisburg, Pa, in 1895 (10 items, 1869-1894). Topics include the governor's inauguration; McCreary's political acquaintances and family friends in Harrisburg; instructions to deposit checks he has sent; and McCreary's concern for his granddaughter's illness and son's financial trouble. A third series comprises correspondence between Sophy and her mother Annette McCreary regarding her mother's stay at a New York City hospital for an operation (5 items). Annette McCreary described the aristocratic nature of the hospital, the capabilities of the doctors and nurses, and the friends who come to visit her. The collection also contains letters written to Sophy from her son Harry at school in Morristown, New Jersey (7 items); letters to Sophy from her daughter Tot describing Tot's experiences away from home (5 items); correspondence to Sophy and her children from Henry Clark (5 items); and postcards written to Henry Clark from M. Reed that deal with business activities (4 items). Another group of letters written to Sophy by her friend Eleanor Bryson (9 items) describes Bryson's struggle with a mysterious illness. A folder of biographical information on the families is included with the collection. Acquired as part of the George Washington Flowers Collection of Southern Americana. (01-029).
